Past Forward: Architecture and Design at the Art Institute
The Art Institute of Chicago has always had an interest in modern architecture and design, collecting drawings, furniture, graphic and industrial designs throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Last fall, they opened a new installation devoted to the museum’s extensive collection, sharing the collection’s breadth while also creating a space that examines how architecture and design is a multilayered, ever-changing experience. As the curators explain, architects and designers have thought of their work as a speculative, experimental endeavor, to propose bold visions for the future.

Chicago Architectural Biennial and Beyond
In a city that is home to numerous design firsts, it’s hardly surprising that some of the greatest minds in the field would gather here to discuss architecture and its historical significance. And with Chicago’s rich architecture history comes a number of significant buildings across the area. 1000M itself aims to add to that list, ushering in a new design era for Chicago. The new class of skyscrapers that will forever change the Chicago skyline
As the birthplace of the skyscraper and home to one of the world’s greatest skylines, Chicago is reinventing itself with new batch of very tall, high profile towers. This Helmut Jahn-created condo building at 1000 S. Michigan Avenue will make a sizable impact on Chicago’s southern skyline when it eventually soars 832-feet over Grant Park. Just behind 1000M on wind-swept Wabash Avenue sits Eleven City Diner, a stout brick-and-glass building serving deli classics and breakfast all day. Newcomers will enjoy the Jewish classics and yet be surprised at how each plate is elevated. The same goes for the restaurant’s interiors, the retro elements blending with modern accents as to give the establishment an authentic twist on contemporary life. THE WOLVES: A HOWL TO REMEMBER
Bathed in the sterile white light unique to indoor soccer pitches, The Wolves opens with two simultaneous conversations darting between the players. Frenetic and frank, these dueling conversations quickly introduce us to the characters in a way difficult to capture on stage. As opposed to neatly framed encounters easily understood by the audience, the playwright Sarah DeLappe daringly throws her audience into the bustle of activity that defines high school girls’ soccer teams without even so much as a nod to who we are listening to. These early conversations deftly provide broad character strokes but DeLappe’s genius really starts to shine as the rest of her play unfolds like an open study.

An Underground City: The Story of Chicago’s Pedway
Developed over a number of years for diverse reasons, without any unifying entity, each segment of the Pedway has its own flavor and style. In general, Pedway segments reflect the architectural style of the building above, creating a potpourri of design characteristics indicative of Chicago’s always-evolving architectural history. Today, people flock to the Pedway for shelter from winter’s snow and cold, as a respite from the heat as they commute from railway stations to work, or to avoid vehicular traffic as they traverse the distances between government buildings.
In an effort to make the Pedway more accessible, the City of Chicago has placed signature blue and yellow compasses at each “official” Pedway entrance. Once underground however, there is hardly any wayfinding for pedestrians to find an exit, so we’ve created a helpful map for you.

Chicago’s 25 most expensive homes for sale right now
"Let’s take a look at the most expensive homes for sale in Chicago. Ultra-luxe condos and mega-mansions are not in short supply here. Just as you’d expect, a lot of these listings come from notoriously high-end streets in the Gold Coast and quadruple-wide mansion lots in Lincoln Park. A handful of these multi-million dollar listings also come from design-build firms, which meaning someone needs to be interested in constructing their own luxurious abode. In one of Chicago’s most anticipated skyscrapers, is also one of the most expensive homes. The Helmut Jahn-designed building with Kara Mann interiors overlooks Grant Park in the South Loop. Construction is expected to start this year on the the tower which includes amenities like a music conservatory and a Himalayan salt room. HENRY TAYLOR: THE ART OF EMPATHY
Speaking to a standing room-only crowd at the Society for Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago (SCA), the critically renowned Henry Taylor jocularly reminisced about the various subjects of his paintings. True to his words, the painting evokes a warm sense of the familiar in the way only Taylor can achieve; slight abstractions of shapes so common and close draped in warm darker tones which seemingly depict the universal in the specific.

GOODMAN THEATRE: A CENTURY OF SUCCESS
In July of 1922, the Art Institute of Chicago received a donation of a quarter million dollars from William and Erna Goodman[i]. This generous gift from the Goodman’s was meant to memorialize their late son, Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, an ardent playwright who had passed away during the influenza epidemic of 1918. While Kenneth Sawyer Goodman had produced many successful plays in his lifetime, his dream had always been of a playhouse that would deftly combine expert theatrical training with world renown performances. Intent on carrying out his dream, the Goodman’s asked the Art Institute to ensure Kenneth’s artistic vision continued past his untimely death. Nearly 100 years following Kenneth Sawyer Goodman’s death, his dream lives on at the theatre that took his name, now under the artistic direction of Chicago’s own Robert Falls.

Helmut Jahn Proves Better Doesn't Have To Be Bigger
The court of public opinion voted down the original plan as too tall for the Michigan Avenue corridor. But instead of merely lopping off a couple hundred feet, Jahn went back to the drawing board to create an entirely different look for the structure, replacing the stacked-block design of the first tower with a curving, twisting tower that actually widens as it grows higher. In fact, that twist would have 1000 South Michigan hanging over its neighbor to the north, 1006 South Michigan, a landmarked building that happens to also be owned by Times Equities, the developer of the Jahn tower.
