VIP ARCHITECTURE DISCUSSION

With the crowd hovering near the stunning video wall, John Goldsworthy of @properties and Jerry Karlik of JK Equities approached the microphone to provide short introductions. Joined by Michelangelo Sabatino, the Dean of the IIT College of Architecture, Helmut Jahn took to the stage in a sleek suit with fashionable white sneakers. Despite the generational gap, the two men engaged like longtime friends, joking about the history of the institution they share. Speaking in his signature German drawl, Jahn addressed Sabatino’s questions about the various chapters of Jahn’s career, including his design for the Thompson Center, which to this day, continues to serve as a lightning rod for fans and foes of Post-Modernism. Through bantor and humor, Jahn and Sabatino reflected back and forth on how time never stops and the city continually changes.

Frenetic and frank, these dueling conversations quickly introduce us to the characters in a way difficult to capture on stage. As opposed to neatly framed encounters easily understood by the audience, the playwright Sarah DeLappe daringly throws her audience into the bustle of activity that defines high school girls’ soccer teams without even so much as a nod to who we are listening to.  These early conversations deftly provide broad character strokes but DeLappe’s genius really starts to shine as the rest of her play unfolds like an open study.

An Underground City: The Story of Chicago’s Pedway

Developed over a number of years for diverse reasons, without any unifying entity, each segment of the Pedway has its own flavor and style. In general, Pedway segments reflect the architectural style of the building above, creating a potpourri of design characteristics indicative of Chicago’s always-evolving architectural history. Today, people flock to the Pedway for shelter from winter’s snow and cold, as a respite from the heat as they commute from railway stations to work, or to avoid vehicular traffic as they traverse the distances between government buildings.

In an effort to make the Pedway more accessible, the City of Chicago has placed signature blue and yellow compasses at each “official” Pedway entrance. Once underground however, there is hardly any wayfinding for pedestrians to find an exit, so we’ve created a helpful map for you.

GOODMAN THEATRE:  A CENTURY OF SUCCESS

In July of 1922, the Art Institute of Chicago received a donation of a quarter million dollars from William and Erna Goodman[i]. This generous gift from the Goodman’s was meant to memorialize their late son, Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, an ardent playwright who had passed away during the influenza epidemic of 1918. While Kenneth Sawyer Goodman had produced many successful plays in his lifetime, his dream had always been of a playhouse that would deftly combine expert theatrical training with world renown performances. Intent on carrying out his dream, the Goodman’s asked the Art Institute to ensure Kenneth’s artistic vision continued past his untimely death. Nearly 100 years following Kenneth Sawyer Goodman’s death, his dream lives on at the theatre that took his name, now under the artistic direction of Chicago’s own Robert Falls.

Helmut Jahn on His Practice, His Career, and His Most Recent Chicago Project 1000M

Named for its address, 1000 South Michigan has been in the works for some time now. Originally set to be a “supertall” building at 1,000 feet, the design has since been scaled back a bit. It’s now 852 feet tall and cantilevers slightly over its neighbors. Stepped boxes have been replaced with sloped sides and curved corners. It’s intended to both fit into its context and stand out—a sleek and confident building bearing the mark of an architect who no longer needs to flash.

A detailed look at 1000M, Helmut Jahn's 74-story South Loop condo tower

As the yet-to-be-built 74-story South Loop skyscraper known as 1000M prepares to start marketing its 323 luxury condominiums, a pair of newly-provided renderings offer the best look yet at the upcoming Helmut Jahn-designed tower. The 832-foot building will feature greenish blue glass, metal horizontal spandrels between each floor, and a crown screened in metallic mesh. Previous—and far less polished—renderings also hint at an unusual exterior lighting element repeated along the tower’s northeast edge.

Site for planned 73-story tower sells for $17 million

Two New York developers that plan a 73-story residential tower on a vacant property across from Grant Park paid $17.2 million for the site, the latest in a series of deals that illustrate the real estate market's recent roller-coaster ride. A joint venture between JK Equities and Time Equities bought the parcel at 1000 S. Michigan Ave. last month from First American Bank, Cook County property records show. The site has been on a wild trip over the past decade or so, with its value soaring during the condominium boom, crashing after the bust and heading back up as the residential market bounced back.

Helmut Jahn Proves Better Doesn't Have To Be Bigger

The court of public opinion voted down the original plan as too tall for the Michigan Avenue corridor. But instead of merely lopping off a couple hundred feet, Jahn went back to the drawing board to create an entirely different look for the structure, replacing the stacked-block design of the first tower with a curving, twisting tower that actually widens as it grows higher. In fact, that twist would have 1000 South Michigan hanging over its neighbor to the north, 1006 South Michigan, a landmarked building that happens to also be owned by Times Equities, the developer of the Jahn tower.

Jahn Pulls a 1,030-Foot-Tall Rabbit Out of His Helmut

We’ve known for some time that a new skyscraper was coming to fill in the surface parking lot currently defiling 1000 South Michigan Avenue. Crain’s Chicago Business broke the news last month, and even told us that starchitect Helmut Jahn had been chosen to work his magic in one of the South Loop’s most visible gaps. But few could have predicted what would hit the City Clerk’s office today.
