Best Beaches in Chicago
23 July 2019
Chicago is a city set apart by its dazzling backdrop of Lake Michigan. 1000M is located just across Grant Park from the lakefront — but where’s the best place on the shoreline to take a dip or bathe in the sun? We’re bringing you the best beaches in the city.
Oak Street Beach – Gold Coast
Oak Street Beach is one of the best places in the city to lay out in the sun or jump in on a game of volleyball. The waves there are always tauntingly lapping the shore, playful beneath a stunning view of the Chicago skyline. If you’re not one for sunbathing, volleyball or swimming, there’s also bike rentals and delicious concessions on standby. Hop on a bike or go it on foot to nearby Gold Coast restaurants and shopping to top off a perfect day in the sun.
North Avenue Beach – Lincoln Park
North Avenue Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the city — and with good reason. Alongside a gorgeous stretch of sand and water, the beach offers bike, kayak, jetski and other water sports rentals. Reprieve from the sunbathing masses is available in the form of an ocean liner-inspired beach house. Atop the landlocked boat’s top deck is a fun spot to enjoy a drink and a view of the city skyline on any Chicago beach.
Montrose Beach – Uptown
Expansive Montrose Beach has it all. There’s no better place to enjoy the smell of barbecue wafting through the air — or grill up your own dogs and burgers if you can snag a spot. The beach also features a dog park and bird sanctuary, where songbirds sing before impressive city skyline views. Sprawling grassy parks and a seawall next to the beach also make for the perfect place to spread out a blanket and read a good book.
12th Street Beach – Museum Campus
The best way to escape the frenzy of downtown beaches is to go south — and it’s not even necessary to go that far. Nestled in the heart of Chicago’s Museum Campus is 12th Street Beach. This hidden spot has a sprawling sandy beach, made all the better by nearby snack stand Del Campos and close proximity to Northerly Island. After soaking up some sun, make the most of your day by visiting the Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum or taking a stroll down Northerly Island. The best part—you can easily walk to 12th Street Beach from 1000M.
When living at 1000M, you’re never far away from your new favorite beach spot in the city. Or, for a more private afternoon in the sun, residents can enjoy the amenities on Level 11, including our Pool and Sun Deck.
