VIP ARCHITECTURE DISCUSSION
With the crowd hovering near the stunning video wall, John Goldsworthy of @properties and Jerry Karlik of JK Equities approached the microphone to provide short introductions. Joined by Michelangelo Sabatino, the Dean of the IIT College of Architecture, Helmut Jahn took to the stage in a sleek suit with fashionable white sneakers. Despite the generational gap, the two men engaged like longtime friends, joking about the history of the institution they share. Speaking in his signature German drawl, Jahn addressed Sabatino’s questions about the various chapters of Jahn’s career, including his design for the Thompson Center, which to this day, continues to serve as a lightning rod for fans and foes of Post-Modernism. Through bantor and humor, Jahn and Sabatino reflected back and forth on how time never stops and the city continually changes.

FREEWHEELING DIVERSITY: THE 23rd ANNUAL ASIAN AMERICAN SHOWCASE
Chicago has been stuck with a stubborn chill that has extended the long winter for our city’s residents. That didn’t prevent throngs of theatergoers from keeping warm on a Friday evening with conversation and excitement as they gathered for a showing of Pretty Woman at the Oriental Theatre. But just around the corner, up State Street, a smaller crowd gathered at the Gene Siskel Film Center for the opening of On/Off Grid, an exhibition of Asian American art, part of the larger 23rd Annual Asian American Showcase. The first film of the series, Fish Bones wouldn’t start for another hour but film buffs, academics and curious culturists came early to peruse the displays.

THE WOLVES: A HOWL TO REMEMBER
Bathed in the sterile white light unique to indoor soccer pitches, The Wolves opens with two simultaneous conversations darting between the players. Frenetic and frank, these dueling conversations quickly introduce us to the characters in a way difficult to capture on stage. As opposed to neatly framed encounters easily understood by the audience, the playwright Sarah DeLappe daringly throws her audience into the bustle of activity that defines high school girls’ soccer teams without even so much as a nod to who we are listening to. These early conversations deftly provide broad character strokes but DeLappe’s genius really starts to shine as the rest of her play unfolds like an open study.

HENRY TAYLOR: THE ART OF EMPATHY
Speaking to a standing room-only crowd at the Society for Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago (SCA), the critically renowned Henry Taylor jocularly reminisced about the various subjects of his paintings. True to his words, the painting evokes a warm sense of the familiar in the way only Taylor can achieve; slight abstractions of shapes so common and close draped in warm darker tones which seemingly depict the universal in the specific.

GOODMAN THEATRE: A CENTURY OF SUCCESS
In July of 1922, the Art Institute of Chicago received a donation of a quarter million dollars from William and Erna Goodman[i]. This generous gift from the Goodman’s was meant to memorialize their late son, Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, an ardent playwright who had passed away during the influenza epidemic of 1918. While Kenneth Sawyer Goodman had produced many successful plays in his lifetime, his dream had always been of a playhouse that would deftly combine expert theatrical training with world renown performances. Intent on carrying out his dream, the Goodman’s asked the Art Institute to ensure Kenneth’s artistic vision continued past his untimely death. Nearly 100 years following Kenneth Sawyer Goodman’s death, his dream lives on at the theatre that took his name, now under the artistic direction of Chicago’s own Robert Falls.

Think You Know The Best of The Cultural Mile? | Transfixed by Centuries-old Mystery
1000M is more than a little bit magical. With otherworldly views and transcendental interior and exterior design, the 1000M experience has an enchantment all its own…so it’s no surprise that the neighborhood is seeped in Chicago’s rich history of magic, entertaining trickery and mysterious spectacle, as well. During the Golden era of modern magic in the late 19th and early 20th century, Chicago was alive with magical performances from the likes of celebrity magicians Alexander Herrmann and Max Malini, who astonished audiences in 1000M’s neighborhood.

Co-founded and co-directed by Aay Preston-Myint and Alexander Valentine, the Fair's programming is free and open to the public, and brings an oft-overlooked medium to the forefront of the Chicago art scene.

Dîner en Blanc | Seeking Beauty In The Unexpected
Dîner en Blanc is an experience like little else. Combining mystery, prestige and absolute elegance, the event is an exceptional opportunity for residents of 1000M to connect with beauty. Dîner en Blanc, which translates to Dinner In White, began in France with François Pasquier in 1988. Pasquier was inspired by the simple but powerful motivation to share an elegant meal with close friends. One day, he spotted a couple in all white enjoying a bottle of champagne at a picnic table.
