A bunch of fresh produce

Throughout COVID-19, we’ve discovered an increased penchant for home cooking, but an (understandably) decreased desire to make a quick grocery store run. The perfect answer to both? Farm fresh produce boxes, delivered to your door — also known as CSAs.

Introduction to CSAs

A CSA, which stands for community supported agriculture, is a share that allows consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from farmers. By purchasing a CSA share or membership, the consumer is given a box of fresh produce, usually weekly, but sometimes biweekly. Because CSAs are paid for in full before the harvesting season, they provide farmers the necessary capital to purchase seeds and equipment to continue running their business.

CSAs are a great way to directly support the local agriculture industry and to build direct relationships with your food supplier. Beyond the promise of tasty, fresh produce, they’re also the perfect way to broaden your culinary horizons and try new things. With the purchase of a CSA, you’ll receive seasonal produce that can inspire adventurous recipes.

Chicago CSAs

There are many local CSAs available in Chicago — a great way to discover the right fit for you is to check out offerings from your favorite farmers market vendors. Odds are, if you’ve enjoyed purchasing from a particular vendor, you’re going to love the produce that comes in their boxes.

Other popular CSAs in Chicago include Angelic Organics, one of the oldest CSA farms in the state with both vegetable and fruit boxes available and Nichols Farm & Orchard, whose CSA offers one of the most diverse arrays of produce around. Mint Creek Farm, on the other hand, offers a monthly grass-fed meat CSA from their organic prairie pasture farm.

Each CSA is differently customized to your unique needs and interests, from its frequency to its offerings — so shop around, find one that’s the right fit for you and get to know your local farms!
