John Singer Sargent at the Art Institute
10 July 2018
Just a short walk from 1000M on Michigan Avenue, the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the most celebrated museums in the world. From July to September, the Art Institute presents the work of prolific portraitist John Singer Sargent, featuring an entire gallery dedicated to his vibrant work.
John Singer Sargent and Chicago’s Gilded Age tells the story of how Sargent’s work and life intertwined with the Second City through his many connections and visits. From his debut in 1888, Sargent made an impression on Chicago that would last for generations to come. His lifelong friendship with prominent Chicagoan Charles Deering, a businessman, art collector and philanthropist, helped bring word of Sargent’s fame and talent to the Midwest. Having spent most of his life in Europe, Sargent corresponded with a large circle of artists, including Claude Monet and Giovanni Boldini. John Singer Sargent and Chicago’s Gilded Age highlights Sargent’s connections to other artists, to cultural events, and to the city of Chicago, giving visitors a holistic view of the artist’s life.
Sargent’s work, while primarily consisting of commissioned portraiture, also encompasses landscape and everyday life, echoing both the style of Edwardian era luxury and the brush strokes of Impressionism. His portraits are striking; each captures the essence of the subject in a stylistic manner that elevated Sargent to fame. John Singer Sargent and Chicago’s Gilded Age displays some of Sargent’s most famous pieces, including Street in Venice, La Carmencita and Mrs George Swinton. The exhibit also features a handful of charcoal portraits and watercolor pieces.
Since 1879, The Art Institute of Chicago has been a vital component to the city’s growth and continues to be an integral part of the 1000M neighborhood. As a new addition to Chicago’s skyline, 1000M encourages residents to explore their creativity and to always seek beauty.
