The James Beard Awards: Celebrating Chicago’s Thriving Food Scene
17 May 2018
Appropriately dubbed the “Oscars of the food industry,” the James Beard Awards celebrate and honor chefs, restaurants and culinary visionaries shaping the American food industry. Chicago not only had the pleasure of hosting the 2018 award ceremony, but also boasts some of the world’s greatest restaurants, all surrounding the 1000M neighborhood.
This year, Chicago took home two awards. Abraham Conlon was awarded Best Chef: Great Lakes in the Best Chefs in America category for his globally-inspired Macanese restaurant, Fat Rice. Conlon’s restaurant is bold, unconventional and has expanded to include brunch, a full-service bakery and a cocktail lounge. Fat Rice is an eclectic Chicago favorite, making it well-worth the trip out to Logan Square.
Chicago’s second James Beard Award went to Uptown’s Sun Wah, owned by Kelly Cheng, Laura Cheng and Michael Cheng. The popular Chinese eatery is one of five recipients of the 2018 America’s Classic award, which recognizes timeless restaurants, cherished for food that reflects the character of their communities. Sun Wah’s menu puts a fresh, contemporary spin on classic Chinese dishes, the most popular being their Peking duck feast.
Past Chicago winners from 2017 include Monteverde, Topolobampo, Alinea and Boka Restaurant Group. Ideally-situated on Michigan Avenue, 1000M is in the heart of a bustling food scene, with past James Beard nominees such as Cindy’s Rooftop, Cherry Circle Room, Sepia and the Purple Pig all within a stone’s throw. And if dining out isn’t an option, 1000M’s luxury condos are equipped with stunning, light-filled kitchens featuring top-of-the-line appliances for entertaining friends and family. In addition, the Level 72 Wine Room, Demonstration Kitchen and Private Dining Room are perfect for larger groups and taking in the spectacular views. Whether eating out or dining in, 1000M residents have plenty of options to explore fantastic and exciting cuisine in the city.
