Grant Park Music Festival: A Beloved Chicago Tradition

3 May 2018

Since 1935, the Grant Park Music Festival has been an integral piece of Chicago’s culture, celebrating a wide array of musicians and composers from around the world. In a city filled with artistic expression, the Festival stands alone as a quintessential summer tradition within 1000M’s vibrant neighborhood. What began as an organized concert to aid unemployed musicians through the Great Depression has grown into a beloved summertime event, featuring world-class guest artists and famous concertos. The Festival’s rich history includes performances by Lily Pons, Van Cliburn and the Paris Opera Ballet. In 2004, the Festival moved into a new home at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry. Today, the Festival operates as a collaboration between the Grant Park Orchestral Association, the Chicago Park District, and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. From the gorgeous architecture, to the years of artistic expression, the Grant Park Music Festival is the perfect complement to the vision of 1000M.

Flexible memberships and one night passes also secure a reserved seat…and the Great Lawn is free and open to the public. The 2018 schedule includes Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. For those with a more diverse music palette, Millennium Park hosts plenty of artists throughout the year, featuring genres such as indie rock, jazz and gospel music.
