As a prominent design feature elegantly integrated into the exterior of 1000M, the sleek Porte-cochère that leads to our expansive 400-car garage allows residents to travel effortlessly from their luxurious condos to their destinations. Designed by internationally-renowned architect Helmut Jahn, the private covered entrance off Wabash Avenue is a very contemporary take on a legendary architectural detail that has been around for centuries.

The Porte-cochère, or coach door in French, began as a common feature on homes and palaces during the reigns of Louis XIV and XV. Eventually, the Porte-cochère grew in popularity in other countries during the Renaissance, signifying wealth and status. The early structures allowed carriages to majestically enter into a courtyard to pick up and drop off passengers — in part as a convenience for riders; in part as a forum for showing off the opulence of the carriages. Over time, the Port-cochère became democratized, evolving into a covered porch over a driveway or at a building’s entrance. And through its permutations, the Porte-cochère’s function has remained the same: to create a covered area where vehicles and passengers can enter and exit without worrying about the surrounding elements. In Chicago, where the weather is anything but predictable, residents of 1000M will stay comfortable and dry in spite of rain, snow, sleet, ice, wind and anything else that Mother Nature sends our way.

For the ultra-convenience of 1000M residents, the Porte-cochère also features 24-hour door staff, guest valet and high-speed garage and lobby elevators. 1000M also provides a personal car and driver service for residents who don’t own vehicles (or want to use them around town). No matter the destinations, transportation for 1000M residents is private, effortless and simple.
