OUT OF SIGHT CHICAGO

7 June 2018

Exuberance. Energy. Happiness. Vision.

What to these words mean? And how to we empower our communities to capture them?

This summer, conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner brings an imaginative new installation piece to Maggie Daley Park titled OUT OF SIGHT Chicago.

This summer, conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner brings a powerful interpretation of these words to Chicago through his upcoming public art installation, OUT OF SIGHT. Based on the game of hopscotch, the piece invites people of all ages to explore, think and play. Though the piece is inspired by a traditional game, Weiner’s interpretation is curved and stylized, alluding to the fluid, non-linear journey that each participant can take. Starting with a list of words, Weiner crafted a pathway in which each square is meaningful, combining poetry, graphic design, philosophy and community engagement.

As one of the central figures in the growth of conceptual art, Lawrence Weiner is known for his thought-provoking installations. Weiner works in a variety of media, including video, film, books, performance art and sculpture. Through simple design, such as printed text on a surface, Weiner crafts a meaningful experience for his audiences. OUT OF SIGHT exemplifies his methodologies, as two-dimensional work creates a journey full of forward motion for surrounding communities.

Before its debut in Chicago, OUT OF SIGHT was installed in Miami, Florida at The Pérez Art Museum and Melbourne at The National Gallery of Victoria. It’s arrival in Chicago is the first installation that’s completely open to the public, including an additional location at Walsh Park in both English and Spanish. Although the piece is for all to explore and enjoy, it has more specifically become a tool for younger generations to discover their potential and future. As the project grows, the tools of self-discovery found in OUT OF SIGHT will be utilized by organizations that engage and educate youths, such as The Motivational Edge in Miami. By working through the game, kids and adults alike begin to consider self-actualization through their life journey, visualizing what can be. OUT OF SIGHT’s Chicago debut contributes yet another meaningful art piece to the 1000M neighborhood.
