VIP ARCHITECTURE DISCUSSION

15 June 2018

It was a balmy summer evening as owners of future residences at 1000M, distinguished members of the real estate community and architecture aficionados gathered at the award-winning 1000M Sales Gallery on Michigan Avenue. Guests mingled freely, admiring the 1000M presentation displays and taking advantage of the open bar. The mood was festive as everyone waited to see the architect, Helmut Jahn, who throughout his career has been a visionary maverick.

With the crowd hovering near the stunning video wall, John Goldsworthy of @properties and Jerry Karlik of JK Equities approached the microphone to provide short introductions. Joined by Michelangelo Sabatino, the Dean of the IIT College of Architecture, Helmut Jahn took to the stage in a sleek suit with fashionable white sneakers. Despite the generational gap, the two men engaged like longtime friends, joking about the history of the institution they share. Speaking in his signature German drawl, Jahn addressed Sabatino’s questions about the various chapters of Jahn’s career, including his design for the Thompson Center, which to this day, continues to serve as a lightning rod for fans and foes of Post-Modernism. Through banter and humor, Jahn and Sabatino reflected back and forth on how time never stops and the city continually changes.

Throughout his career, Helmut Jahn has been at the forefront of championing new technologies to execute his cutting-edge design. His secret, he explains, is to use novel approaches and materials selectively and subtly, as he has done with 1000M’s 13˚ cantilever over the building to the south. Jahn also reflected on the shift within the architectural discourse from enormous disdain for the comfort of people living within the walls of design gems to genuine concern for human experience. With 1000M, Jahn explained that through his genuine collaboration with interior designer Kara Mann, this ultra-luxury condominium tower will provide an uncompromising commitment to the art of living, with its breathtaking design, lavish amenities, forever views and extraordinary location on Grant Park.

As the evening wound down, the discussion veered towards the topic of legacy. The John Hancock and Willis Towers, built decades ago, are now such icons that one could not imagine the Chicago skyline without them. In the same way, Jahn and Sabatino have aspirations for 1000M joining the landscape of legendary buildings. There’s no question that when 1000M is built, it too will dramatically alter the city’s skyline.
