YO-YO MA AND THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

13 June 2018

Tonight, the ornate halls of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will sound with the melancholic and pensive tones of Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto as Yo-Yo Ma returns to Chicago once more. The legendary cellist is no stranger to the Windy City; Ma is a frequent collaborator with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a passionate advocate for the city’s growth. Just a short distance away from 1000M, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has brought artistic expression and cultural milestones to the city since its opening in 1891, including Yo-Yo Ma and his prolific performances.

Ma grew up in New York City as a child prodigy, performing for presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy by the time he was five. Throughout his career, Ma has recorded more than 90 albums and received 18 Grammy Awards, partnering with orchestras and recording studios around the world. Aside from his work as a performing artist, Ma is invested in global communities and institutions, including Chicago. Ma is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Judson and Joyce Grene Creative Consultant, collaborating with the orchestra and its education programs. An advocate for social change and the power of music, one of Ma’s most recent collaborations in Chicago was his Concert for Peace in June of 2017. From his social activism to his beautiful performances, Yo-Yo Ma’s presence in Chicago is a powerful one.

Right down the road from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 1000M is where music, luxury, community and artistic expression reside.
